Good health care has been proven to reduce school absenteeism, keeping students in the classroom for continued learning and improved achievement.
The Frederick County Health Department, in close collaboration with Frederick County Public Schools, is in the process of establishing a school-based health center at Hillcrest Elementary to address the pressing health needs of students in this school community.
When the center opens on August 17, 2009, it will be one of 65 school-based health centers in Maryland and the first in Frederick County. Essentially a "doctor's office at a school," it will provide onsite comprehensive preventive and primary health services as well as mental health, oral health, ancillary and supportive services. The center will be staffed by one or more primary care providers, registered nurses and dental hygienists.
The startup is funded through a two-year grant from the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission. The Frederick County Health Department is providing the medical expertise, management, infrastructure and experience necessary to operate the health clinic. FCPS will provide access to students, the space on school grounds to house the health clinic, and support and guidance from various individuals and departments within the school system. |
